I was deeply saddened to learn about the youth violence that took place in our community last week. Students at Aurora Central and Hinkley high schools—as well as every school in our city—have the right to feel safe in schools, parks and neighborhoods. Parents deserve to feel confident that when their children leave for school, they will also return home safely.
Violence that affects our youth is distressing, and sadly, school violence is a national health problem. I wish all of the injured students a safe and prompt recovery.
Aurora Sister Cities International’s core values are: community, mutual respect, inclusion, learning and service. Youth in our community need us to come together to enhance mutual respect, learn from violent incidents and provide the mental health services needed to ensure that students in our city are safe and healthy everywhere and every day.
